Successful Breast Cancer Fundraiser!

Our Breast Cancer Fundriser consisted of 4 main events:

Part 1: Free educational seminar on the benefits of exercise during & following Breast Cancer treatment
Part 2: Massage-a-thon (15 minute massage by donation) ran by our Athletic Therapists
Part 3: Live Auction with donations from the Kingston Community
Part 4: CIBC Run For The Cure

Part 1:

The free seminar ran from 9:00 am to 11:00 am and consisted of three speakers. The keynote speaker at the free educational seminar was leading-edge researcher Dr. Lianne Dolan of the Princess Margaret Research Team & Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. Dr. Dolan educated the audience on how exercise therapy can decrease common side-effects in cancer patients. She has 10 years of experience implementing exercise programs for Breast Cancer patients during and after cancer therapy at the BC Cancer Agency and University of British Columbia. Her expertise and experience provoked some great questions and comments from the audience.

The second speaker was KATC Co-owner and Athletic Therapist, Jean Soleyn, MSc(Rehab Sci), CAT(C), CSCS. She spoke about the benefits of manual therapy to decrease pain and improve function. Together Dr. Dolan and Jean provided tools to empower the audience with options for the recovery process.

The third speaker was wife, mother, retired Registered Practical Nurse, and Breast Cancer survivor Joanne Slater. Joanne spoke about her battle with Breast Cancer during and after her diagnosis in August of 2010. After her diagnosis Joanne underwent 20 radiation treatments and a partial mastectomy. Joanne has been cancer free since 2011. Her speech was incredibly powerful!

Part 2:

The second part of Cancer Survivorship Day took place 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. There was a lot going on at this time during the day. Inside of KATC 5 of our Athletic Therapists ran a Massage-A-Thon (15 minute massages for a minimum $10 donation). There was a silent auction with donations from the Kingston Community inside the massage room and a bake sale set up in the private Athletic Therapy treatment area. On display in the gym were all the items up for grabs in the live auction at 2:00 pm.

Outside of the building we had a few special guests. The Mission Street North food truck supplied food by selling tacos and burritos. They were generous enough to donate $1 for every taco or burrito sold to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Local band the Cloud City Architects were set up just outside the door and performed live for an hour. Amazing local music talents!

A truck from City of Kingston Fire & Rescue, Shelley & John Mills, Kaye's Klubhouse, Comedy Mentalist Buzz Collins, and Jung Do Martial Academy provided entertainment for all the kids at Cancer Survivorship Day. Lots of people took the opportunity to get their picture taken with the fireman. Shelley & John Mills provided us with a bean bag toss game and some help to make sure it ran smoothly. Kaye’s Klubhouse provided face painting for kids in a tent set up outside. Comedy Mentalist Buzz Collins pulled off some pretty spectacular illusions for people of all ages. Robert Cumming and some of the students at Jung Do Martial Arts Academy dazzled us with their skills.

Part 3:

The final phase of Cancer Survivorship day provided the most laughs. We can thank our Live Auctioneers Harry & Chris for that. With a combined total of $3,600 worth of items from the Kingston community in the Live and Silent Auctions Harry & Chris had plenty of ammunition to get the audience to crack a smile, handover some cash, and walk out of KATC with some sweet items! Up for grabs were 3 different paintings from 3 different local artists, 6 sports jerseys, gift certificates for everything from a bouncy castle to labour from a Licensed Electrician, and many smaller items. At times the bidding was tense, but Harry & Chris managed to get people laughing despite the intensity in the room. A huge thanks goes to these gentlemen for donating their times and skills.

Part 4:

The final phase of our Breast Cancer fundraiser invovled the KATC team participating in the CIBC Run for the Cure on October 5th. Conditions were windy and cool, but it was such a fun way to finish our fundrasier as a team!

Cancer Survivorship Day was filled with powerful information for Breast Cancer patients/survivors, massage by donation, great deals on amazing items from local business, and fun activities for kids. But most importantly it raised money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. With the money raised September 27th and the small amount of donations that followed on the day of the run KATC is proud to announce that we raised $5,054.20!!

Thank you
