What is Athletic Therapy?

Best known for providing immediate on-field emergency care of professional and national athletes, Athletic Therapists are skilled in returning athletes to competition and maximizing their performance potential as fast as possible after an injury.

Those same skills and techniques also make Athletic Therapists very effective in treating the injuries sustained by everyday active Canadians, including:

  • Common injuries from falls, daily activities and sports

  • Chronic and recurring conditions

  • Pre-surgical and post-surgical rehabilitation

  • Emergencies at sporting events such as concussion, fractures, and spinal injuries

  • Workplace and motor vehicle accidents

Faster Results

Athletic Therapists rehabilitate injuries using the Sports Medicine Model, a method that focuses on the individual taking an active approach to rehabilitate their orthopedic injury. This results in a faster recovery, a reduced chance of further injury, and fewer visits to a healthcare professional.

At your first appointment your Athletic Therapist will perform a thorough assessment to determine the extent and cause of your injury. Your Therapist will also ask you questions about your current injury, previous injuries, health history, and any medications you are taking. This information will provide a direction for your treatment plan.

What is Cranial Sacral Therapy?

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, light-touch method of evaluating and enhancing the craniosacral system, the environment in which the brain and spinal cord function. An imbalance or dysfunction in the
craniosacral system can cause sensory, motor or neurological disabilities. These problems may include chronic pain, eye difficulties, scoliosis, motor-coordination impairments and learning disabilities, as well as other physical and psychological problems.

What is Visceral Manipulation?

Visceral manipulation uses gentle techniques to mobilize the tissues throughout the abdomen, pelvis and thorax, which in turn can reduce tension on the connecting musculoskeletal structures. By addressing restrictions, this also helps to improve circulation to the tissues being treated as well as to the rest of the body. Together, these benefits can alleviate chronic musculoskeletal pain, improve visceral function and promote whole body wellness.

Treatment for Babies and Children

“Musculoskeletal strains on the newborn during growth and development and especially during delivery can cause problems throughout life. Recognizing and treating these dysfunctions in the immediate post partum period is one of the most important phases of preventative medicine” – Dr. Viola Frymann

Many of the tension patterns that a newborn experiences because of the birthing process, are eased with breastfeeding and skin to skin touch.  Often, newborns will maintain tensions that can influence the musculoskeletal system (torticollis), the digestive system (colic, reflux, vomiting) or the nervous system (sucking issues, functional digestive disorders and even learning disorders). It is in these situations that intervention is needed to ease the tension on the tissues to ensure a seamless transition throughout their growth and development.

How do we treat babies?

The techniques used by our Athletic Therapists are gentle, hands-on soft tissue mobilizations that increase circulation to the affected areas and decrease the strains or pulls that are limiting range and development.

At KATC we treat both mom and baby to ensure that tensions and stress that the mother can be experiencing are eased, which results in a much happier relationship between the two. Mothers are inherently caregivers, however, the care is almost always directed towards the baby and self-care tends to be forgotten.  Tensions caused by feeding, holding the child, lack of sleep and birth trauma are addressed in our mom and baby sessions.
